Can you rent kayaks or canoes at Juniper Springs?

Yes, you can rent kayaks from the Juniper Springs Recreation area. Unfortunately, there are no reservations. Kayak rentals are first come, first serve.

The cost to rent a kayak is $50 for a single kayak, and $60 for a double kayak.

If you have your own kayak or canoe, you can launch from the Juniper Springs Recreation area for $10 per watercraft.

There is a limit of 95 vessels allowed on Juniper Run each day.

I highly recommend renting a single kayak. The experience is much better with singles, even though double kayaks save a little money. Single kayaks offer greater control and ease of navigation, which is crucial for this challenging course.

Once we paid for our kayak, we signed a waiver and watched an orientation video going over the basics of kayaking, and important information you needed to know regarding the run.

Is Kayaking Juniper Springs Worth it?

For those seeking more adventure, kayaking Juniper Springs offers a truly unforgettable experience.

If you are renting a kayak, you'll need to walk your kayak to the launching area using the provided carts. After returning the cart, you'll receive life jackets and paddles and will be responsible for launching yourselves into the water.

From the start, you'll see why this is one of the top kayak runs in the country. The 7.3-mile trip downstream through the Juniper Prairie wilderness area takes about 3-4 hours to complete.

However, it's important to note that this course is not suitable for beginners. The run is challenging, with narrow passageways, shallow areas with underwater obstacles, hairpin turns, Class 1 rapids, and low-hanging trees and vegetation.

However, experienced paddlers will absolutely love this route!

The trip starts with breathtaking scenery and doesn't let up throughout the journey. You'll be kayaking through the middle-of-nowhere natural Florida wilderness, which is kept as close to its natural state as possible. Expect to see a variety of wildlife, including some dangerous ones.

During our trip, we saw numerous turtles basking in the sun and fish swimming beneath the surface. However, be aware that there are plenty of snakes, including venomous ones like water moccasins. We encountered a snake crossing the river and heard from another kayaker about a massive water moccasin sunning on the shore.

Additionally, please be aware that there are alligators along the course. During orientation, we were warned that it was mating season, and there was a particularly aggressive mother gator known to protect her babies.

Thankfully, we did not see her, but we did spot other gators, including one about 12 to 13 feet long.

There is a small rapids section shortly after mile 5. This Class 1 rapid is easy to maneuver through, even for beginners. However, the rest of the course remains challenging due to the narrow and winding waterways.

You'll be given a pickup time for the takeout point, usually about 4 hours after your launch time. We launched at 10 AM and our pickup time was 2 PM. Although you can complete the trip in 3 hours, we took our time and still had 20 minutes to spare.

There are mile markers along the way to help you gauge your progress and adjust your pace accordingly.

At the end of the run, you'll pass under the lone bridge on the trail, marking the end of your journey. The exit is immediately after on the right, where you'll board the shuttle. This convenient shuttle service takes you back to the starting point, making it easy to retrieve your vehicle and wrap up your adventure.
