If you're a Star Wars fan visiting Disney World's Galaxy's Edge, the Droid Depot is a must-do experience. This interactive shop lets you build and customize your own astromech droid, making for an unforgettable souvenir and experience. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know—from the build process to personality chips and how your droid interacts with Batuu. Plus, we'll give our review of the BB-8 series droid to help you decide if it's right for you!

Where Is the Droid Depot Located?

The Droid Depot is conveniently located near Savi’s Workshop, where guests can build their own lightsabers. If you're entering from Toy Story Land, this will be one of the first shops you’ll see. The depot's industrial design immediately immerses you in the Star Wars universe, setting the stage for an exciting adventure.

What Is the Atmosphere Like?

As soon as you step inside, you’re transported to a bustling droid repair shop. Conveyor belts carrying colorful droid parts move past you, and the air is filled with the whirring of tools, the clanking of metal, and the beeping of assembled droids. The theming is incredible, making you feel like you’re inside a real Star Wars movie.

Step 1: Check-In and Choosing Your Droid

Your experience begins at the check-in station, where you’ll choose between two droid models:

  • BB-Series: Known for their rolling bodies and playful personalities (like BB-8).

  • R-Series: The classic astromech design, made famous by R2-D2.

Once you've chosen your model, you’ll receive a basket and blueprint to guide you through the build process.

Step 2: Picking Parts at the Parts Station

At the Parts Station, you’ll select the components needed to build your droid. These roll past on conveyor belts, allowing you to pick and choose different colors and styles.

  • BB-Series droids require: Dome, Dome Connection Plate, Body Sphere, and Motivator.

  • R-Series droids require: Dome, Body, Center Leg, and Side Legs.

This is where you can make your droid unique, mixing and matching colors to your liking.

Step 3: Assembling Your Droid at the Build Station

With your selected parts, head to the Build Station to put everything together. Each station has detailed placemat instructions, tools, and a graphic monitor to assist you. As you assemble your droid piece by piece, you’ll feel like a true droid engineer!

Step 4: Activation – Bringing Your Droid to Life

The most magical part of the process is activation. With the push of a button, your droid powers up, beeping and booping as it syncs with its remote control. Watching it move and respond for the first time is a special moment—your droid is now ready for adventures!

How to Customize Your Droid: Personality Chips & Add-Ons

Once your droid is assembled, you can further customize it with Personality Chips. These chips influence how your droid behaves and sounds throughout Galaxy’s Edge.

Available Personality Chips:

  • Resistance: Friendly and chatty

  • First Order: Stern and authoritative

  • Scoundrel: Mischievous and cunning

Each chip alters your droid’s interactions at Black Spire Outpost. A Resistance droid may act nervous around the First Order, while a Scoundrel droid has a more rebellious attitude. If you're unsure which to pick, a cast member can let you preview the sounds before purchasing.

Additional Customization Options:

  • Model Kits & Accessories: Upgrade your droid with unique features.

  • Premium Droids for Purchase: R2-D2, BB-8, Pit Droid, RX-24, C1-10P, and even an interactive Babu Frik.

  • Life-Sized Custom Droids: Available for $25,000!

Can Your Droid Interact with Galaxy’s Edge?

Yes! Your droid is designed to react to its surroundings throughout Galaxy’s Edge. It will:

  • Beep at First Order Troopers

  • Respond to hidden signals in the marketplace

  • Interact with other droids nearby

There’s even a play area outside the Droid Depot where you can test out your new companion alongside other builders!

BB-8 Droid Review: Is It Worth It?

We built a BB-8 droid, and here’s our honest review:

  • Movement: The rolling mechanism mimics BB-8’s motion impressively but takes practice to control.

  • Battery Life: Uses 6 AA batteries for the droid and 2 AAA for the remote.

  • Sleep Mode: After 5 minutes of inactivity, the droid shuts off and must be manually restarted. Unlike the R-Series, which has an easy-access switch underneath, the BB-8 unit requires opening it up, which can be a bit inconvenient.

  • Personality Chip Placement: Easily installed to alter voice and interactions.

Verdict: If you love BB-8’s design and don’t mind learning the controls, it’s a fun and immersive souvenir!

Tips & Tricks for a Smooth Experience

  • Make Reservations: This experience is extremely popular, so book in advance.

  • Builder + One Guest Rule: Only the builder can assemble the droid, but you can bring one guest to watch.

  • Price: $119.99 per droid, plus tax (includes a carry box and instructions).
