Top 5 Things To Do in Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park is one of the most underrated national parks in Florida—and honestly, one of my favorites. Located just south of Miami, it’s a tropical paradise made up of clear blue waters, vibrant coral reefs, hidden islands, and lush mangrove forests. 95% of the park is underwater, which means you’ll need to get out on the water to really experience it.
Whether you’re into snorkeling, paddling, or just soaking in the views, here are 5 must-do things in Biscayne National Park that belong on your Florida travel bucket list.
1. Take a Boat Tour to Boca Chita Key
Boca Chita Key is the most iconic island in the park—and once you visit, you’ll get why. It’s home to a charming 1930s lighthouse, white sand edges, and unbeatable views of Biscayne Bay. Most tours leave from the Dante Fascell Visitor Center and include a relaxing ride across the water plus time to explore the island.
Hike the quarter mile trail around the island, bring a picnic, or just chill under the palm trees. It’s basically the definition of island vibes.
2. Snorkel the Coral Reefs and Shipwrecks
If there’s one adventure to book in Biscayne, this is it. The park is part of the Florida Reef, the third-largest coral barrier reef system in the world—and it's packed with life. A snorkeling tour will take you out to shallow reef sites where you can spot parrotfish, brain coral, and sea fans swaying in the current.
There is a chance that the snorkel tours will take you to explore one of the historic shipwrecks along the Maritime Heritage Trail. However, weather and sea conditions need to be ideal on the day of your visit.
The Maritime Heritage Trail consists of six wrecks plus the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse. While some of the wrecks are best visited with SCUBA gear, there a few sites that can be easily enjoyed while snorkeling.
3. Paddle Through the Mangroves at Jones Lagoon
Nature lovers will love a guided tour through Jones Lagoon. Jones Lagoon is a shallow, protected area filled with seagrass beds and mangroves—basically a nursery for marine life. You can only get there by boat, and the best way to explore it is by kayak or paddleboard.
On a calm day, the water’s so clear you can spot baby sharks, turtles, and colorful fish just beneath the water's surface. It’s quiet, peaceful, and one of the most unique places in the park.
4. See the Historic Houses of Stiltsville
Floating out in the middle of Biscayne Bay, Stiltsville is a surreal little “village” of pastel-colored wooden houses built on stilts. Back in the day, these offshore hideouts were known for wild parties, speakeasies, and stories that feel straight out of a movie.
But over the years hurricanes and storms, especially Hurricane Andrew in 1992, destroyed most of them.
Today, the remaining houses are protected and make for an awesome photo op. The only way to see them is by water—so book a boat tour to Stiltsville or keep an eye out if you're passing by on your way to one of the islands.
5. Stop by the Dante Fascell Visitor Center
Even if you’re short on time, the Dante Fascell Visitor Center is a must. It’s your jumping-off point for exploring the park, and it offers exhibits, interactive displays, and even an art gallery inspired by the park's landscapes and ecosystems.
This is where you can get souvenirs, park maps, and get your National Park Passport collector stamps and stickers.
There’s also a short trail and boardwalk where you can spot fish right from shore and see the Miami skyline across the bay. It’s a great intro to Biscayne—and where you’ll catch most of the tours if you’re heading out on the water.
